Gonstead Chiropractic vs. Other Chiropractic Techniques in Malaysia

Gonstead chiropractic is increasing in popularity in Malaysia. It is essentially a specific technique that some chiropractors choose to use exclusively. But there are many different types of chiropractic techniques; Gonstead technique, activator technique, Thompson technique, Toggle technique and diversified technique. So which is better? How do you choose? Before you make a decision, it’s helpful to understand a little more about Gonstead vs. other chiropractic techniques.

1. What is Gonstead Chiropractic?

A system of chiropractic protocols that were developed by Clarence S. Gonstead. This method utilises a specific set of protocols and tools to specifically determine the area of the spine that is the source of the patient's pain or discomfort.

2. What protocols are used in Gonstead chiropractic?

Gonstead chiropractic uses 5 criterias to detect any problems or misalignment in the spine

  • X-ray analysis

  • Visualisation and observation

  • Instrumentation

  • Motion palpation

  • Static palpation

3. What are the main differences between Gonstead and other chiropractic techniques?

Gonstead chiropractic requires x-rays to help determine which parts of your spine need alignment and where the treatment plans should focus. Non Gonstead chiropractors do not require an x-ray during the initial consult and exam but may refer you to get an x-ray for your case.

Typically Gonstead chiropractic requires you to remove your clothing and be dressed in a gown. Most other chiropractors will be able to consult and examine you with your clothing on.

Gonstead chiropractors use a variety of tables and tools for adjustments. Such tables are the high-low table and the knee-chest table. Other chiropractors will usually use 1 type of table which has a drop in the middle.

There’s no way to know for sure which is better than the other as everyone responds to treatments differently. The important thing is to talk to your chiropractor and ask them questions to get more clarity on the treatment plan you will receive. It is not conclusive. If you have a good chiropractor, the type of technique shouldn’t be an issue as they will provide you with honest advice and an efficient treatment plan.

4. Should I go for Gonstead chiropractic or normal chiropractic?

You should consider which makes you feel more comfortable. It is best to book an initial consultation and understand how the chiropractor runs their practise and their treatment philosophy. In our opinion it is always useful to see a chiropractor who practices a few techniques to get advice for the best treatment method specific to your needs.

5. Does Kim’s Chiropractic use the Gonstead method?

Kim’s Chiropractic incorporates elements of Gonstead in our adjustment but we do not exclusively use the Gonstead method. We prefer to practise a variety of chiropractic techniques because we personalise combination techniques that will be best for the patient we are dealing with. Each case is subjective and we personalise our treatment plans depending on the consultation and examination of the patient.
